Research Objects

The objects of activity of the Centre for Research of Social and Humanitarian Crises are focused on the comparative, theoretical and applied analysis of social and humanitarian crises both in Greece and internationally.

The research and pedagogical activity of the Center gives special emphasis to the following:

i) Investigation of historical, political, economic and psychosocial factors that contribute to the triggering of crises.
ii) Prediction and prevention of social and humanitarian crises (crisis prevention / disaster preparedness).
iii) Crisis management (disaster management).
iv) Rehabilitation and support of communities (populations) affected by the crisis.
v) Mapping and studying the sources of vulnerability and resilience of communities, groups and individuals.

At the same time, the Laboratory utilizes models of interdisciplinary, community intervention in the fields of promoting prosperity, empowerment, rehabilitation and social change of groups, individuals and communities that have been affected by social and humanitarian crises.

Members of the Centre currently engage with research and scholarly work the following themes:

  • Climate Change and Environmental Crisis
  • Covid-19 as a social crisis and public health crisis
  • Armed conflict, displacement and refugee journeys
  • Historical wrong-doings of social services
  • Institutional racism and structural homophobia (gender and sexually diverse)
  • Restorative, retributive and transitional justice
